Barnstaple Heritage Tours
Step back in time to hear the stories of historic Barnstaple
This year's town tours will start on Thursday 2nd April at 11am with Margaret who is really interested in the town's early history.
Tours continue every Thursday at 11am, starting at Barnstaple Heritage Centre on the Strand, throughout the spring and summer.
Tickets (available from the Heritage Centre)
The tour takes about an hour and the ticket includes entry to the Heritage Centre Exhibition.
Places can be booked in advance on 01271 373003, and there are just 12 places available on each tour.
No two tours will be the same as all our volunteer tour guides have different interests and styles.
If your group would like to book a Heritage Tour or a more comprehensive tour which includes access to The Heritage Centre, St Anne's and The Guildhall, call in to the Heritage Centre or phone 01271 373003 for information and prices.
Heritage Trail Book.
The new Barnstaple Heritage Trail was launched in 2009 as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Albert Clock Project.
The book is on sale from Barnstaple Heritage Centre, or from our online shop, priced at £3.50, or view the Barnstaple Heritage Trail on the links below.
Audio Heritage Trail
The Barnstaple Audio Heritage Trail will guide you around some of Barnstaple’s most interesting buildings and monuments. Along the way you will hear many fascinating tales that help to piece together the story of a town that is well over 1000 years old.
The trail will take approximately an hour at an easy pace and there are plenty of places where you can take a rest or get refreshments. If you are walking with children activity books are available here to download, or pop into the Barnstaple Heritage Centre at the start of the trail, where the Activity Books are on sale for 50p each.
The activity books were produced by Barnstaple Town Council as part of a Heritage Lottery Funded project centred on the conservation of the Albert Memorial Clock Tower in the Square.
Download the full audio trail (in a zipped folder) onto your computer and transfer it to an MP3 player or phone.
If you can access the internet on your mobile phone why not take the Heritage Trail walk and listen to each track while you are there, by selecting the relevant audio file below*.
