Councillor Ian Roome is highly honoured to be elected by Barnstaple Town Council to serve as the town’s Mayor for the forthcoming year 2018-2019. Cllr Ian Roome was first elected to Barnstaple Town Council in 2003 and represents Pilton ward. He has previously served the community as Mayor of Barnstaple for two years from 2010-2012.
Ian was born and bred in Sheffield and is a proud Yorkshire man, although he has spent most of his life living in Barnstaple. At the age of 17 he joined the Royal Air Force as a Telecommunications Specialist and served at many military establishments both at home and overseas, including a detachment at the Ministry of Defence during the first Gulf conflict. He maintains strong links with RMB Chivenor and was the main volunteer fundraiser to raise £250k towards the Tri-service Memorial Garden, which is at the entrance to the base.
He describes himself very much as a family man and he has two daughters, Miss Ailsa Roome and Miss Jessica Roome who were born at North Devon District Hospital.
Cllr Roome is the Head of Fundraising and Volunteering for the Over and Above charity at Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust. Together with his team and the local community he started and led a campaign to raise over £2.5m to build the now Seamoor Unit, which treats patients fighting cancer and other illnesses at North Devon District Hospital.
Ian is very passionate about improving the educational and training opportunities for young people. To help deliver this aim he is a school governor at Pilton Community College with special responsibility for those pupils with special educational needs and those in receipt of Pupil Premium. He also promotes strong work experience links with young learners from our twin town Susa in Italy and local businesses here in Barnstaple. He is helping Dr Anna Gianccone, from Susa, with a work experience project which was recently granted 59,000 euros from the European Union, to help facilitate training opportunities for young people.
He is also a North Devon Councillor and belongs to many committees which include Barnstaple Town Centre Management, Devon Association of Larger Councils and volunteers for many voluntary organisations including being the Vice Chairman of Barnstaple branch of the Royal British Legion and the Royal Air Force Association.
