The Mayor's Year 2011 - 12

Sunday 29th April 2012.  1ST Battalion The Rifles exercised its Freedom of the Town of Barnstaple. The Rifles Regiment, with the Salamanca Band and accompanied by the Army Cadet Force and the Old Comrades Association, marched through the town to the Pannier Market, where the salute was given. The Mayor of Barnstaple, Cllr Ian Roome, and Brigadier Richard Toomey inspected the troops, whilst Deputy Mayor, Cllr Mrs Lesley Brown, and Colonel Ashley Fulford inspected the Army Cadet Force. Brigadier Young inspected the Old Comrades.

Monday 16th April 2012.  At the Annual Town Meeting in Barnstaple Guildhall the Mayor of Barnstaple, and Squadron Ldr Hugh Pierce of 22 Squadron, presentated the RAF Community Plate to Chief Inspector Toby Davies. Chief Inspector Davies was recognised for his work as Sector Inspector in Barnstaple and for his good leadership, guidance and support which has benefitted the Barnstaple Community

Saturday 14 April 2012 - The Mayor joined the living history re-enactors, the Sealed Knot, on the anniversary of "The Siege of Barnstaple" outside Barnstaple Heritage Centre.

20th – 23rd March 2012. The Mayor visits one of Barnstaple’s twin towns, Susa, Italy, with a group from Pilton Community College, Barnstaple.

Sunday 22nd March.  The Mayor presents a special Mayoral Certificate to Anna Giaconne of Susa, Italy, in recognition of her dedication and commitment to the cause of international friendship between the towns of Susa, Italy and Barnstaple, United Kingdom.

March 2012 - Applegate Directory Ltd celebrated the recruitment of its 100th employee with a £1,000 donation to the North Devon Chemotherapy Appeal. The Mayor, Councillor Ian Roome, accepted the cheque and learned of the company's ambitious plans to expand further.

The Town Council staged a Palio in Rock Park Barnstaple with guests from Barnstaple’s twin town of Susa, Italy.  There were spectacular Medieval Costumes on show and performances of Drums and Flag Waving, Archery and Tug-of-War. 
The Barnstaple Archery Club staged competitions and archery displays, the Barnstaple Town Youth Marching Band lead the parade and The Barnstaple Pilot Gig Club bravely took on the Italians in a Tug-of War.

Monday 15th August 2011 - VJ Remembrance Day Service with the Burma Veterans in Rock Park.

 

Sunday 14th August 2011 - The Mayor took charge of the chequered flag and presented the winning teams with their trophies at Barnstaple’s first ever lawn mower and pedal car “grand prix.”

The afternoon of racing was organised by Petroc and BID Barnstaple in aid of the Children’s Hospice South West.

Tuesday 5th July 2011 – Attended the Annual Lunch of the Inner Wheel Club at the Park Hotel to accept a cheque for £150 for the Mayor’s Charity.

After the failure of the first attempt, a new toy train challenge occurred on 16 April 2011, to attemptto race a toy train between Barnstaple and Bideford in North Devon.

Saturday 4th June 2011 – Visited the Almshouses and Pilton House and distributed the Mayor’s Shillings.

 

Saturday 4th June 2011 – Took part in the Devon Wildlife Trust Festival Parade from the Library to the Town Square and opened the Festival.

Friday 27th May 2011 – Attended the opening of the New Ganges Restaurant.

 

Monday 23rd May 2011. The new Mayor of Barnstaple, Councillor Ian Roome, signs the Oath of Allegiance at the Mayor Making Ceremony in the Guildhall Barnstaple.
