CIVIC & CEREMONIAL

Barnstaple Town Council provides a range of civic and ceremonial activities and events for the town, including provision of the Town Mayor and Mayoral events, annual and other Remembrance services, and the ancient Barnstaple Fair Proclamation.

TOWN MAYOR AND MAYORAL EVENTS

The Town Mayor is elected annually by town councillors. As well as being the Chairman of the Council, the Mayor has an important role as a ceremonial and community representative. He or she is invited to attend community events, open new facilities in the town, and attend events outside Barnstaple as the town’s official representative. The Mayor is also the figurehead for a number of annual civic events including:

Mayor Making
Mayor’s Civic Service
Barnstaple Fair Proclamation
Remembrance Sunday
Christmas Fayre and Carol Concert

Each year the Mayor also raises funds for one or more chosen charities.

In the absence of the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor may deputise at civic events/engagements.

For more information on the current Mayor, the Mayor’s charities, and how to request the Mayor’s attendance at an event, see our ‘Mayor and Mayoral Year’ page

REMEMBRANCE SERVICES

The Royal British Legion (Barnstaple Branch) is the custodian of Remembrance activities in the town, but the Town Council organises and delivers two services on its behalf:

Remembrance Sunday.
On Remembrance Sunday each year the Act of Remembrance is honoured with a civic procession along Taw Vale to the War Memorial in Rock Park (approx. 10.45am), and a service at the War Memorial attended by civic dignitaries, representatives of the armed forces, other groups with links to the military, and the public. A further procession follows, from Rock Park to the Parish Church, where a Remembrance Sunday service is held.

Children’s Remembrance Service.
On the Friday before Remembrance Sunday each year, local schools are invited to send a group or class of students to a service at the War Memorial in Rock Park (approx. 10.40am) with readings, music and an Act of remembrance led by the Royal British Legion. The event is open to all and various civic dignitaries will attend, but it is focused on the children themselves.

BARNSTAPLE FAIR PROCLAMATION

The ancient ceremony proclaiming the opening of the annual Barnstaple Fair is arranged and led by Barnstaple Town Council, and takes place on the Wednesday before the 20th September in the Guildhall. Civic guests, dignitaries and invited members of the public are guests of the Mayor and the Town Council for this special occasion. For more information see our Barnstaple Fair page

'ONE-OFF' EVENTS

Other individual civic and ceremonial activities may be organised by the Town Council during the year to mark important current or historic events.
